Inside Ali and Nick’s Heartfelt Indianapolis Art Museum Wedding

From the very beginning, I knew Ali and Nick’s Indianapolis Art Museum wedding would be something truly special. Set in a space filled with personal history and quiet beauty, their day unfolded like a living painting. Years ago, as a teenager, Ali would come to the museum to do her homework in the galleries, to wander, to think, and to feel at home among the art. Returning here, this time with her family and friends, felt like adding a new memory to an already beloved place.
Every detail was thoughtfully chosen. Nothing was done for show. It was beauty with depth—quiet, grounded, and deeply personal.
I absolutely adore this family, and I am happy to share their love story with you on the blog today.

Meet Ali and Nick
Ali and Nick both live and work in New York City. On paper, they’re intense and brilliant. In person, they are funny, warm, and effortlessly magnetic. They first met at a daytime fraternity party (a “Darty”) at Vanderbilt, the kind of serendipitous moment that now feels inevitable in hindsight. Their home is filled with vinyl records and a thriving collection of houseplants.
Small things that have become symbols of their life together, and items guests associate with them. Many even joked about having “plant-sat” for the couple at some point. That deep familiarity (those little shared stories) shaped many of the details throughout the day. And rather than register for gifts, Ali and Nick asked guests to support the Indianapolis Museum of Art, which felt especially meaningful given the wing named in their family’s honor.
Getting Ready for their Indianapolis Art Museum Wedding
Ali and Nick spent the morning separately, surrounded by the people they love most. The mood was calm, joyful, and steady. Ali got ready in a sun-drenched room with her closest friends and family. Her look was timeless—her gown structured but soft, her hair swept into a classic bun, and her bouquet a simple, full gathering of creamy white peonies.
Nearby, Nick dressed with his groomsmen, some of whom had traveled from across the world to be there. Guests came from six countries, including New Zealand, where Nick’s mother lives, and the Netherlands, honoring their shared Dutch heritage.

First Looks and Family Moments
Before the ceremony, Ali shared a first look with her father, Tom. As he walked in and saw his daughter in her wedding dress, he visibly held back tears. The moment they hugged, was one of the most heartfelt moments of the day. Ali’s parents, Tom and Roberta were deeply loving and supportive. Tom referenced his and Roberta’s 33rd anniversary multiple times throughout the weekend, and their love for Ali was present in every quiet, steady gesture.
Ali and Nick also shared a quiet, beautiful first look. Nick entered the room already smiling, and the moment he saw her, the world seemed to still. Their embrace was full of ease and affection, more like coming home than anything else.

Portraits in the Garden
Before the ceremony, Ali and Nick slipped away for portraits in the Newfields gardens. The setting was like something from a storybook. Arched trellises, blooming roses, and dappled sunlight filtering through the trees. They walked together through the paths, sometimes laughing, sometimes just holding hands and taking it all in.
Ali’s gown moved beautifully with every step. There was a sense of calm in these portraits, a couple fully present with each other, not just posing, but being.
Soon, the bridal party joined them outside. Rather than matching dresses, Ali had asked each woman to choose something that felt authentic to her. The result was spectacular: a palette of deep berries, dusty greens, soft metallics, and painterly florals.
Standing in front of the museum’s grand façade, the group looked like they stepped out of a Dutch Master’s painting—rich in texture and full of personality. The bouquets echoed that lushness, with gathered blooms that felt fresh, organic, and wildly romantic.

A Joyful Ketubah Ceremony
After portraits, the couple gathered for their ketubah signing surrounded by close family and friends. There was laughter, hugs, and heartfelt blessings. A moment of joyful sacredness before stepping into the larger ceremony. It was clear that faith and tradition mattered deeply, but what stood out most was the love in the room.

A Ceremony in the Gardens of the Indianapolis Art Museum
Ali and Nick were married in the museum’s formal gardens, surrounded by sculpted hedges, tall trees, and living plants chosen with care. The aisle was framed with palms, money trees, and air plants—textural and natural, never overdone. It felt more like a natural extension of the gardens themselves, than a traditional setup.
The ceremony layout was open and organic. A wooden chuppah stood at the top of the aisle, lush and textural, draped in trailing greenery and layered with garden roses in blush, apricot, and antique gold. Spires of white stock and delicate vines softened the structure, giving it a romantic, overgrown feel. Rooted in nature but entirely refined.
One of the most memorable details came when Ali walked down the aisle. She had chosen a special song to surprise Nick, one that held deep meaning for both of them. He didn’t know it was coming. His reaction was tender, emotional, and entirely genuine.
Just before the ceremony began, her father, Tom, instinctively reached for Roberta’s hand before taking his seat. It was a simple, unscripted moment of love, quietly observed and beautifully captured, a reflection of the legacy that surrounded them both.

Cocktail Hour in the Garden
After the ceremony, guests were welcomed into a lush cocktail hour still nestled in the gardens. The weather was perfect. Drinks flowed, laughter echoed, and guests wandered through a space that felt like a living extension of Ali and Nick’s home.
Wedding favors were one of the most talked-about details. A tribute to the couple’s plant-filled apartment, each guest was invited to choose a living plant suited to their home’s light and space. The gifts, sourced from local shop Grounded, were boxed and ready for pickup after the celebration. For international guests, curated alternatives, such as plant-themed playing cards, books, and shears, were offered with equal care. Guests later said the favors would “grow with them,” a sentiment that beautifully mirrored the heart behind the day. Guests were able to “shop” for the plant they wanted during cocktail hour, and by the end of the reception they were wrapped and waiting for them at the exit.

A Dinner Among the Gardens
Following the cocktail hour, guests gathered in the museum’s gardens for dinner under the open sky. Tables stretched across the lawn in long, graceful rows, surrounded by layered greenery and architectural beauty. Each setting was intentional, lush yet understated, designed to feel like an extension of the landscape itself.
Instead of traditional escort cards, guests found miniature art prints waiting for them. Each was hand-selected by Ali and Nick to reflect a personal connection or shared memory. Friends spent time admiring the artwork, holding them up with smiles and laughter, turning what’s often a formality into something intimate and warm.
As the sun dipped lower, Ali stood and gave a speech. She spoke of the museum’s galleries, where she had spent her teenage years studying, sketching, and finding quiet comfort. “This place holds so many memories for me,” she said. “I always found myself coming here, again and again. And today, with all of you here, I hope this is another memory for the mantle on your wall.” Her words were heartfelt and deeply personal, echoing through the garden with a quiet grace.

A Reception Rooted in Meaning
After dinner, guests were invited inside the museum for dancing and late-night celebration. Moving through the glass atrium and into the modern galleries, the mood shifted from elegant to electric. The same building where Ali once wandered quietly now pulsed with laughter, music, and movement.
Ali and Nick shared their first dance under soaring ceilings, surrounded by the people who knew them best. Their energy was magnetic—elegant, yet unreserved. You could feel their joy. Family and friends circled the floor, clapping, cheering, singing along. From there, the evening built with intention.
Their band filled the space with sound and soul. Lush florals framed the stage in golden apricots, sunset blush, and rich taupe, a nod to the Old World palette used throughout the day. Guests danced under art installations and modern architecture, their energy spilling out into every corner of the space.
At the edge of the dance floor, a custom coffee cart served espresso drinks and lattes. A favorite ritual of the couple’s and a thoughtful late-night touch.

A Celebration That Will Grow
As the evening came to a close, guests gathered their artful keepsakes—boxed plants and miniature prints—each one a reminder of the beauty, thoughtfulness, and care woven into every part of the day. It was clear: nothing was done without purpose. Every gesture held meaning.
Ali and Nick approached their wedding with clarity and intention. They knew what mattered to them, and they made every choice with that in mind. It was beautiful, but more importantly, it was true to who they are.
I’m so glad they trusted me to help shape that experience. Being their planner wasn’t just an honor, it was a joy.
