Mary & Max’s Wedding on the Monon Trail and Carmichael Hotel

Bride and groom embrace in a lush garden courtyard at the Carmichael Hotel along the Monon Trail, surrounded by elegant stone planters and greenery.

Mary and Max’s wedding will always hold a special place in our hearts, not just because it fell on my own birthday, but because the entire celebration felt so deeply personal, beautifully intentional, and overflowing with meaning.

These two high school sweethearts (yes, really!) have grown up together, lived next door to each other in college, and built a life rooted in joy, family, and fierce friendship. From the moment Max proposed in the spring of their senior year, their story has felt like something out of a movie. Their wedding day was no different.

Getting Ready at the Carmichael Hotel

We started the morning at the stunning Carmichael Hotel, nestled right along the Monon Trail in Carmel. The bridal suite buzzed with excitement as Mary and her bridesmaids got ready in matching powder-blue pajamas. Shannon (Mary’s mom and best friend), popped in with warmth and support, and her presence added such a lovely layer to the morning. You could feel how close everyone was.

Mary had prepared the sweetest gifts for her bridesmaids. Personalized baskets filled with thoughtful items that made each person feel truly appreciated. It set such a gracious tone for the day. She also gifted her parents with embroidered handkerchiefs, each stitched with a special message. We always love when a gift brings the room to tears before the dress even goes on.

Meanwhile, Max and his groomsmen prepped in their own suite. The guys were classic and cool in black tuxes, with Max looking every bit the leading man. He was absolutely ready for his close-up, especially once the dancing started (but we’ll get to that!).

A Floral Dream on the Monon Trail

The ceremony took place on the Monon Trail, in the very spot that transforms into the Carmel Farmers Market each Saturday morning. The second the market wrapped up, we moved in with a full court press to transform the space. Within a couple hours, it turned into a lush floral dream.

We layered soft pastel blooms along the aisle and constructed a breathtaking floral arch that framed the couple perfectly between the Carmichael Hotel and the Palladium. It’s one of those tucked-away spots that feels like a European garden, so elegant and natural all at once.

Because it’s a public garden, we had to remove everything afterward, so we repurposed the ceremony florals around the reception stage. Nothing went to waste (just how we like it).

Design That Told Their Story

Mary and Max are the kind of couple who value experience. So we designed their celebration to be not just beautiful, but interactive and something their guests would remember long after the night ended. Everywhere you turned, the florals made a statement. We wanted layers of texture, with garden-inspired color blocking that felt airy but full. The florist understood the assignment, and then some.

Mary and Max wanted food stations instead of a formal dinner. Each food station had a unique drink pairing, styled with the kind of intention you don’t often see. Each food item was paired with a drink. Martinis paired with salad in petite glassware, Italian wines served next to a bubbling cheese-wheel pasta station, margaritas by the tacos, and brisket alongside Kentucky mules. Even the sliders came in custom paper boats in a soft blue tone that tied back to their color palette.

Menus guided the experience so guests knew exactly what to try (and why). The idea was simple but powerful: Mary and Max have always been the perfect pair, so we paired food and drinks to reflect that. It felt both playful and personal.

The Sweetest Surprise

One of the most emotional moments of the night came from a surprise we planned with Shannon for Mary. Growing up, Mary’s grandmother lived next door to a See’s Candies shop. A chocolatier known for its black-and-white striped awnings. It was their little ritual, and the memory became a treasured part of her childhood.

To honor that, we custom-built a See’s candy cart (complete with the brand’s signature black and white striped awning) and placed it at the base of the sweeping Carmichael staircase. When Mary saw it, she cried in the most beautiful, raw way (the kind of “ugly cry” that makes everyone else tear up too).

We styled the cart with platters of See’s favorites, signs identifying each one, and even displayed a photo of her grandmother holding a giant box of chocolates. It became a gathering place for the family to sit, reminisce, and celebrate a woman they all loved deeply. Late that night, Shannon handed out See’s to guests like Oprah—”you get a caramel, and you get a caramel!”—and it was honestly our favorite moment of the entire day.

Casino Night and a Twist on the Traditional Reception

During the seated reception, and a heartfelt speech from Mary’s dad (who absolutely crushed it), we opened up the rest of the night—casino-style!

The couple’s reception was spread across multiple rooms, each with its own atmosphere. Feinstein’s, the chic downstairs venue at the Carmichael Hotel, became our casino lounge. Think poker tables, moody lighting, and Max’s must-have: a live band that absolutely brought the house down. Guests played games, danced their hearts out, and competed for actual prizes (including Colts suite tickets). Mary’s attention to detail made it so fun (she even had a prize sign that would make any Vegas lounge proud).

Every room had its own personality, complete with thoughtful seating groups, signature vessels, and purposeful styling. Even the guest book (set up with a deck of cards) fit the theme. Guests wrote notes on playing cards and dropped them into a keepsake box. (So perfect for casino night!)

Later in the evening, Mary and Max participated in the Italian wedding cake tradition where the couple builds their own cake. Max took the lead and absolutely nailed it. The photos are darling.

Late night, we opened the full bar and brought out comfort favorites: pizza, breadsticks, beer, and even Uncrustables paired with martinis, an ode to a beloved piece of artwork the couple owns. Naturally, we brought that painting into their wedding design and served martinis with Uncrustables. Guests went wild for it (sometimes the simplest details become the most memorable).

A Celebration That Felt Like Them

Looking back, this wedding could have taken place in another country. It had that much style and warmth. But everything about it was rooted right here—in their story, in their families, and in this beautiful corner of Indiana along the Monon Trail and Carmichael Hotel.

We’re so proud of how this day came together. From the florals to the music, the food to the games, every decision was made with love. And that’s what wedding planning should be: an experience as layered, thoughtful, and joyful as the people it’s celebrating.

Mary and Max, thank you for letting us walk alongside you. What a day. What a perfect pair.
